Semicollared Flycatcher

Ficedula semitorquata

The Semicollared Flycatcher is a small migratory Old World flycatcher that breeds mainly in south-eastern Europe and western Asia and winters in sub-Saharan Africa. Breeding males are striking black and white, with a white forehead patch, wing markings and a partial white collar; females and non-breeding birds are browner and can resemble other Ficedula flycatchers. It frequents mature deciduous woodland, woodland edges and wooded river valleys, where it hunts insects from exposed perches and also takes prey in short aerial sallies. Careful views of the collar, wing pattern and tail markings are useful for identification.
