Semipalmated Sandpiper

Calidris pusilla

The Semipalmated Sandpiper is a small shorebird with a mottled brown and white plumage, a short straight black bill, and distinctive black legs. During the breeding season, it can be found in the Arctic tundra, where it nests on the ground in open areas near water. In the winter, it migrates to coastal areas in South America, the Caribbean, and the southern United States. This species forages for insects, crustaceans, and other invertebrates by probing the mud with its bill. The Semipalmated Sandpiper is known for its long-distance migration and is often seen in large flocks during migration periods.
