Senegal Thick-knee

Burhinus senegalensis

The Senegal Thick-knee, also known as the Water Dikkop, is a medium-sized shorebird found in sub-Saharan Africa. It has a distinctive appearance, with a large head, long legs, and a mottled brown and white plumage that provides excellent camouflage in its sandy and rocky habitats. These birds are primarily nocturnal and are known for their loud, wailing calls during the breeding season. They feed on a diet of insects, small mammals, and reptiles, using their keen eyesight and stealthy hunting techniques to capture prey. The Senegal Thick-knee is not currently considered to be at risk, and its populations are relatively stable.
