Pluvianus aegyptius
The Senegal Thick-knee, also known as the Water Dikkop, is a medium-sized wader bird found in sub-Saharan Africa. It has a distinctive appearance with a large head, long legs, and a prominent yellow eye. Its plumage is predominantly brown with intricate patterns for camouflage. This species is known for its loud, piercing calls during the night. The Senegal Thick-knee is primarily nocturnal and feeds on insects, small mammals, and crustaceans. It prefers open habitats such as grasslands, savannas, and wetlands, where it can blend in with its surroundings. Despite facing threats from habitat loss and human disturbance, its conservation status is currently assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN.
