Seychelles kestrel

Falco araeus

The Seychelles kestrel (Falco araeus) is a small bird of prey endemic to the Seychelles archipelago. It is known for its distinctive plumage, with a dark brown back and wings, a rufous tail, and a pale underside with fine black streaks. This kestrel is a skilled hunter, preying on small birds, insects, and lizards. It inhabits a variety of habitats including forests, woodlands, and coastal areas. Due to habitat loss and predation, the Seychelles kestrel faced a severe decline in the 20th century, but conservation efforts have helped to stabilize its population.
