Sharp-shinned Hawk

Sharp-shinned Hawk, Accipiter striatus, breeds across North America and Middle America and belongs to the Accipitridae. Described by Vieillot in 1808, it is a small hawk. It is also known as the northern sharp-shinned hawk, and the name sharpie is used for it. The species has a complicated taxonomic history, with some authorities treating southern forms as separate species. A later genetic study also proposed splitting three Caribbean island populations into three further species, but this has not been taken up by ornithological authorities.
