Gypsophila brevicaudata
The Short-tailed Eagle (Gypsophila brevicaudata) is a large raptor found in the mountainous regions of South America. With a wingspan of up to 2 meters, this impressive bird of prey is known for its distinctive short tail and powerful, soaring flight. Its plumage is predominantly dark brown, with lighter mottling on the underside. Short-tailed Eagles are opportunistic hunters, preying on a variety of small mammals and birds. They are often observed riding thermals in search of prey, and their piercing calls can be heard echoing through the Andean valleys. Despite their adaptability, habitat loss and persecution pose threats to their populations.
