Calandrella brachydactyla
The Short-toed Lark is a small, ground-dwelling bird found in open habitats such as steppes, grasslands, and agricultural fields across Europe, Asia, and North Africa. It is characterized by its streaked brown plumage, a pale belly, and a short hind claw, which gives it its name. This species is known for its melodious song, often delivered in flight. Short-toed Larks forage for seeds and insects on the ground, using their sharp bills to extract food from the soil. They are highly migratory birds, with populations in Europe wintering in sub-Saharan Africa. While the global population trend is declining, the Short-toed Lark is currently classified as Least Concern by the IUCN.
