Shovel-billed Kookaburra, Dacelo rex, is a kingfisher of New Guinea, where it occurs across most of the island apart from the Trans-Fly and south-eastern New Guinea. It lives mainly in hill forest, though it has been noted from sea level to 2400 m. Its most striking feature is a heavy, short, broad bill unlike that of any other kingfisher. The bird is generally dark brown, with a dark head, a white throat, a rufous neck collar and underparts, and a bright blue rump. Males and females differ in tail colour, and young birds resemble females.
