Sickle-winged Nightjar

Caprimulgus fraenatus

The Sickle-winged Nightjar (Caprimulgus fraenatus) is a nocturnal bird found in the tropical and subtropical regions of South America. It is known for its distinctive sickle-shaped wings and cryptic plumage, which provides excellent camouflage during the day. This species is primarily insectivorous, hunting on the wing at dusk and dawn. It is often observed near open areas such as savannas, grasslands, and forest edges. The Sickle-winged Nightjar is a medium-sized nightjar with a wingspan of around 50-60 cm. Its plumage is predominantly mottled brown and gray, providing effective camouflage against tree bark and leaf litter. The conservation status of this species is currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN.
