Sira Curassow

The Sira Curassow (Pauxi koepckeae) is a large, elusive bird found in the cloud forests of the eastern Andes in Peru. It is known for its striking appearance, with glossy black plumage, a distinctive blue facial patch, and a long, curly crest. This species is primarily herbivorous, feeding on fruits, seeds, and insects found in the forest understory. Due to habitat loss and hunting, the Sira Curassow is considered critically endangered, with only a few hundred individuals remaining in the wild. Conservation efforts are focused on protecting its remaining habitat and reducing hunting pressure.
