Slaty-breasted Wood Rail

Aramides saracura

The Slaty-breasted Wood Rail, or Aramides saracura, is a medium-sized bird found in the wetlands and marshes of South America. It is characterized by its slate-gray breast and belly, contrasting with its brown wings and back. This species is known for its loud, repetitive calls that echo through its habitat. Slaty-breasted Wood Rails are primarily ground-dwellers, foraging for insects, small vertebrates, and plant matter in the dense vegetation. They are often observed skulking through the underbrush, utilizing their strong legs and long toes to navigate the marshy terrain. While not currently considered threatened, the destruction of its wetland habitats poses a potential risk to its populations.
