Slaty Bristlefront, Merulaxis ater, is a tapaculo of south-east Brazil, where it is confined to a narrow strip near the Atlantic coast. It lives in humid forest in lowland and mountain areas, with the lower edge of its range usually at 400 m and reaching 1,800 m in the north. Both sexes carry a short, stiff crest at the base of the bill and on the forehead. The male is mostly dark blue grey, while the female is mainly brown with paler throat and breast.
