Smith's Longspur

Calcarius pictus

The Smith's Longspur is a small migratory bird known for its distinctive breeding plumage, which includes a black face and breast with a white belly and chestnut nape. During the non-breeding season, the plumage becomes more subdued. These birds are often found in open grasslands and prairies, where they forage for seeds and insects. They are known for their aerial displays during courtship, where males perform fluttering flights. Smith's Longspurs are considered a species of least concern by the IUCN, but they may face threats from habitat loss and agricultural expansion.
