Sooty Albatross

Phoebetria fusca

The Sooty Albatross (Phoebetria fusca) is a large seabird with a wingspan of around 200-220 cm. It has dark brown to black plumage, a pale bill, and a white patch on the underwing. These majestic birds are known for their graceful gliding flight over the open ocean. Sooty Albatrosses are primarily pelagic, spending most of their lives at sea and only returning to land to breed. They are skilled fishers, using their keen eyesight to spot prey on the water's surface. These albatrosses are found in the southern oceans, often near the Antarctic Convergence. They are known for their long-distance migrations and are vulnerable to threats such as fisheries bycatch and plastic pollution.
