Sooty-capped Chlorospingus, Chlorospingus pileatus, is a passerine of the New World sparrows found in Middle America, in Costa Rica and western Panama. It was described by Salvin in 1865. The bird is tied to isolated mountain areas, including volcanoes in north-central Costa Rica, the Cordillera de Talamanca, and further sites in Chiriquí. It lives in montane evergreen forest, elfin forest, and mature secondary forest, mainly in the subtropical and lower temperate zones, and is a year-round resident. It is marked by a sooty black head with a bold white stripe running back from the eye and down the neck.
