Sooty Currawong

Strepera fuliginosa

The Sooty Currawong (Strepera fuliginosa) is a large passerine bird native to eastern Australia. It is known for its distinctive sooty black plumage, long tail, and strong, melodious calls. These intelligent birds are often found in forested areas, woodlands, and urban parks, where they forage for a variety of foods including insects, fruits, and small vertebrates. Sooty Currawongs are skilled vocal mimics and are known for their complex and varied calls. They are often observed in family groups and are territorial during the breeding season. Despite being adaptable to human-modified landscapes, habitat loss and urbanization pose threats to their populations.
