Sooty Honeyeater

Melionyx fuscus (De Vis, 1897)

Sooty Honeyeater, Melionyx fuscus, is a honeyeater of the montane forests of western to south-eastern New Guinea. It occurs in the New Guinea Highlands and is associated with moist subtropical or tropical mountain forest. The species was described by De Vis in 1897. It was once included in Melidectes, but a 2019 molecular study led to its return to Melionyx. Its English name was also updated at that time, replacing the earlier name sooty melidectes.
