Sooty Oystercatcher

Haematopus unicolor

The Sooty Oystercatcher (Haematopus unicolor) is a distinctive shorebird found along the coasts of Australia. It is easily recognized by its all-black plumage and bright red eyes and bill. These birds are often seen foraging along rocky shorelines and tidal flats, using their strong bills to pry open shellfish and other invertebrates. They are known for their loud, piping calls and are often seen in pairs or small groups. Sooty Oystercatchers are monogamous and form long-term pair bonds. They are considered a species of least concern, with stable populations across their range.
