Sooty Oystercatcher

Haematopus fuliginosus

The Sooty Oystercatcher (Haematopus fuliginosus) is a distinctive shorebird found along the coasts of Australia. With its all-black plumage, long red bill, and bright red eyes, it is easily recognizable. These birds are often seen foraging along rocky shorelines, where they feed on mollusks and crustaceans. Sooty Oystercatchers are monogamous and typically nest in pairs on rocky ledges or in crevices. They are known for their loud, piping calls and are considered a symbol of the Australian coastline.
