Sooty Tern

Onychoprion fuscatus

The Sooty Tern, also known as the Wideawake Tern, is a seabird found in tropical and subtropical oceans. It has a distinct black plumage with a white underside, a deeply forked tail, and long wings. Sooty Terns are known for their remarkable long-distance migrations, traveling thousands of miles between their breeding colonies and foraging areas. They are highly adapted for life at sea, spending most of their lives in flight or on the wing. Sooty Terns breed in large colonies on remote islands, laying a single egg in a shallow scrape on the ground. They are skilled fishers, feeding on small fish and squid by plunge-diving from great heights.
