South African Shelduck

Tadorna cana

The South African Shelduck, scientifically known as Tadorna cana, is a striking bird species native to southern Africa. These medium-sized waterfowl are characterized by their distinctive chestnut and white plumage, with a dark green head and bright pink bill. They are often found in wetlands, marshes, and estuaries, where they feed on aquatic plants, insects, and small crustaceans. South African Shelducks are known for their strong pair bonds and elaborate courtship displays. While their population is currently stable, they face threats from habitat loss and hunting in some areas.
