South Georgian Diving Petrel

Pelecanoides georgicus

The South Georgian Diving Petrel is a small seabird found in the southern oceans. It is known for its remarkable diving abilities, using its wings to propel itself underwater in search of small fish and crustaceans. This species is characterized by its dark plumage, white underparts, and distinctive white patches on its wings. South Georgian Diving Petrels are highly adapted to a life at sea, spending most of their lives on the wing or on the water. They breed in colonies on remote islands, often in burrows or rocky crevices. Despite their widespread distribution, these birds face threats from introduced predators and habitat degradation.
