South Island Oystercatcher, Haematopus finschi, breeds inland on South Island, New Zealand, and in the non-breeding season moves to coastal North Island and Stewart Island. It is an endemic oystercatcher of New Zealand and is one of the country’s common species. The bird is a pied wader with black and white plumage, a long red-orange bill and red legs. It can be told from the pied form of the variable oystercatcher by its white lower back, greater white on the wing and a more forward black-and-white boundary on the breast.
