South Island Robin

Petroica polymorpha

The South Island Robin, or Petroica polymorpha, is a small passerine bird native to New Zealand. It is known for its friendly and inquisitive nature, often approaching humans in search of food. This species has a distinctive black head and upperparts, with a white belly and a prominent white spot above the bill. They are highly territorial and can be found in a variety of forest habitats, including beech forests and shrublands. South Island Robins primarily feed on insects and invertebrates, foraging on the ground and in the lower vegetation. Due to habitat loss and introduced predators, the conservation status of the South Island Robin is currently listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN.
