Southern Emu-wren

Stipiturus malachurus

The Southern Emu-wren (Stipiturus malachurus) is a small, secretive bird native to the southern regions of Australia. It is known for its striking plumage, with males displaying vibrant blue and black colors on their back and tail, while females have more subdued brown and rufous tones. These birds inhabit dense, low-lying vegetation in heathlands, shrublands, and woodlands, where they forage for insects and small invertebrates. The Southern Emu-wren is a cooperative breeder, with small family groups working together to build dome-shaped nests. Despite their once widespread distribution, habitat loss and fragmentation have led to population declines, resulting in their current conservation status being listed as 'Near Threatened' by the IUCN.
