Southern Helmeted Curassow

Crax daubentoni

The Southern Helmeted Curassow, scientifically known as Crax daubentoni, is a large bird species found in the Amazon rainforest of South America. It is characterized by its striking black plumage with a prominent helmet-like casque on its head. These birds are primarily frugivorous, feeding on a variety of fruits and seeds, and are known for their distinctive calls that echo through the dense forest. They inhabit the understory and lower canopy of tropical rainforests, where they play a crucial role in seed dispersal. Unfortunately, due to habitat loss and hunting, the Southern Helmeted Curassow faces significant conservation threats.
