Southern Martin

Progne elegans

The Southern Martin (Progne elegans) is a species of swallow found in South America. It is known for its striking black plumage with a contrasting white rump and underparts. These agile birds are often seen in open areas, including grasslands, savannas, and agricultural fields, where they catch insects on the wing. They are highly social and form large flocks during the non-breeding season. The Southern Martin constructs cup-shaped nests made of mud and plant fibers, often under the eaves of buildings or in other man-made structures. While their populations are currently stable, habitat loss and pesticide use pose potential threats to their future.
