Southern Masked Weaver

Ploceus velatus

The Southern Masked Weaver is a small songbird found in southern Africa. Males are known for their striking breeding plumage, with bright yellow and black markings, while females and non-breeding males have more subdued plumage. These weavers are known for their intricate, gourd-shaped nests, which they construct from grass and leaf strips. They are highly social birds and are often found in large colonies. Their diet consists mainly of seeds and insects. The Southern Masked Weaver is a common sight in savannas, woodlands, and suburban areas, where they can be seen foraging for food and displaying their impressive nest-building skills.
