Southern Red Bishop

Leistes bellicosus

The Southern Red Bishop is a small passerine bird native to southern Africa. The male is striking with its bright red plumage and black face mask, while the female is more subtly colored with streaked brown and buff. These birds are often found in wetlands, grasslands, and agricultural areas, where they forage for seeds and insects. During the breeding season, the male displays vibrant plumage and performs elaborate courtship displays to attract females. The Southern Red Bishop is not currently considered to be at risk, with stable populations throughout its range.
