Southern Sooty Woodpecker, Mulleripicus fuliginosus, is a woodpecker of the southern Philippines, breeding on Samar, Leyte and Mindanao. It was described by Tweeddale in 1877. It lives in tropical moist lowland primary forest, reaching up to 1,000 metres above sea level, and does not seem to use degraded or secondary forest. It is set apart from the northern sooty woodpecker by its light ashy grey plumage, ivory bill, the male’s red cheek mark, and larger white spots on the neck and face.
