Thraupidae — Tanagers & Allies

Spangle-cheeked Tanager, Tangara dowii, breeds in Costa Rica and Panama, where it is found in the highlands of Costa Rica and western Panama. It is a tanager of wet mountain forest canopy, and also uses more open places such as clearings with trees, second growth and woodland edges. It is known for its mainly black plumage with blue scaling on the breast, face and neck, a rufous crown patch, blue-edged wings and tail, a green rump and a cinnamon belly. Adults are similar between the sexes, though males show more blue scaling.
