Spangled Kookaburra, Dacelo tyro, is a kingfisher in Australasia, breeding on the Aru Islands south-west of New Guinea and in south-central New Guinea. It was described by Gray, GR, in 1858. Also known as the Aru giant kingfisher, it belongs to the family Alcedinidae and the order Coraciiformes. The species is recorded from the Aru Islands and southern New Guinea. Little is known about its family life or breeding biology. Two subspecies are recognised, D. t. tyro from the Aru Islands and D. t. archboldi from New Guinea.
