Speckle-throated Woodpecker

Campethera scriptoricauda (Reichenow, 1896)

Picidae — Woodpeckers

Speckle-throated Woodpecker, Campethera scriptoricauda, is a woodpecker of open woodland in Tanzania, Malawi and Mozambique. It occurs from eastern and central Tanzania north to Handeni, including the North Pare Mountains and the area around Mount Kilimanjaro, through central and south-eastern Malawi, and in Mozambique between Beira and the lower Zambezi. Its throat is marked with speckles that carry forward, which sets it apart from the Nubian and Bennett’s woodpeckers. It is greenish above with yellowish barring, paler below, and has a pale bill.
