Speckled Boobook

Ninox punctulata

The Speckled Boobook, also known as the New Britain Boobook, is a small to medium-sized owl found in the rainforests and wooded areas of New Britain, New Ireland, and nearby islands in the Bismarck Archipelago of Papua New Guinea. It has a distinctive speckled plumage, with a mottled pattern of brown, black, and white feathers that provide excellent camouflage in its forest habitat. This nocturnal bird of prey feeds on insects, small mammals, and birds, and is known for its haunting, melodious call during the night. The Speckled Boobook is not currently considered to be at risk, and its population is believed to be stable.
