Speckled Rail, Laterallus notatus, breeds in southern Paraguay, southern Brazil and eastern Argentina. It is a rail of marshes, swamps, grassy savanna, rice and alfalfa fields, and the margins of humid woodland. Adults are very dark brown, with white spotting on the upperparts and white barring below. It was first described by Gould in 1841 and is now placed in Laterallus. The species is also known from Uruguay, Guyana and Venezuela, and has been recorded as a vagrant in Colombia.
