Spectacled Monarch

Tephrodornis virgatus

The Spectacled Monarch (Tephrodornis virgatus) is a small passerine bird found in the forests and woodlands of Australia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea. It is known for its distinctive black and white plumage, with a striking black mask across its eyes that gives it the appearance of wearing spectacles. This insectivorous bird is often observed foraging for prey in the mid to upper levels of the forest canopy, where it darts and flits among the foliage with agility. The Spectacled Monarch is known for its melodious and varied song, which it uses to communicate with its mate and defend its territory. Despite facing threats from habitat loss and fragmentation, the species is currently classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, owing to its relatively stable population and widespread distribution.
