Spectacled Owl

Pulsatrix perspicillata (Latham, 1790)

Spectacled Owl, Pulsatrix perspicillata, is a resident owl of Middle America and South America, from southern Mexico to north-eastern Argentina. It is mainly tied to tropical rainforest and dense old-growth forest, though it also uses forest edges and other more open wooded places, and has been recorded in dry forest, plantations and semi-open areas with trees. In Costa Rica it reaches subtropical montane cloud forest up to 1,500 m. It is marked by white facial markings, yellow eyes and pale bill, with dark upperparts and a juvenile that is almost entirely white apart from a chocolate brown facial disc.
