Pulsatrix perspicillata
The Spectacled Owl (Pulsatrix perspicillata) is a large, powerful owl found in tropical forests of Central and South America. It is named for the distinctive white feathers encircling its eyes, resembling spectacles. This nocturnal bird preys on small mammals, birds, and reptiles, using its keen hearing and sharp talons to hunt in the darkness. The Spectacled Owl is known for its deep, resonant hooting calls and is often heard rather than seen. It nests in tree cavities and is generally solitary, except during the breeding season. Despite being fairly common in its range, habitat loss and deforestation pose threats to its population.
