Splendid Astrapia

Astrapia splendidissima

The Splendid Astrapia is a stunning bird of paradise found in the mountain forests of New Guinea. It is known for its iridescent plumage and long, flowing tail feathers. The male has a velvety black body with a metallic green crown, while the female is a chestnut brown with white underparts. These birds perform elaborate courtship displays to attract mates, including acrobatic flights and vocalizations. They feed on fruits, insects, and small vertebrates. Due to habitat loss and hunting, the Splendid Astrapia is facing conservation concerns.
