Splendid Woodpecker, Campephilus splendens, is a woodpecker of Middle America and South America, breeding in Panama, western Colombia and north-west Ecuador. It lives in humid and wet forest, montane forest, and at forest edges, from near sea level up to 1,600 m in Panama, 1,100 m in Colombia and about 800 m in Ecuador. It is a year-round resident. The species was described by Hargitt in 1889 and is placed in the family Picidae. It was long treated with the crimson-bellied woodpecker before being recognised as a separate species.
