Spot-backed Puffbird, Nystalus maculatus, is a bird of South America, breeding in north-east, central and south-central Brazil, eastern Bolivia, western Paraguay and central Argentina. It belongs to the puffbird family Bucconidae and is part of the Piciformes. It is a species that has at times been treated as two, with the Brazilian form known as the Caatinga Puffbird and the southern form as the Chaco Puffbird. Its range covers lowland and foothill cerrado, caatinga and campo, along with other semi-open country.
