Spot-bellied Bobwhite

Cyrtonyx ocellatus

The Spot-bellied Bobwhite is a small ground-dwelling bird native to Mexico and Central America. It is known for its distinctive black and white spotted plumage on the belly, which provides excellent camouflage in its grassland and scrub habitat. These birds are primarily seed-eaters, foraging on the ground for grass seeds, insects, and small invertebrates. They are often found in family groups and are known for their whistling calls. Due to habitat loss and hunting, the Spot-bellied Bobwhite is facing population declines in some areas.
