Spot-bellied Eagle-Owl, Ketupa nipalensis, is a forest owl of southern India and Sri Lanka, with a breeding range that also reaches the Himalayas and south-east Asia. It was described by Hodgson in 1836 and belongs to the owl family Strigidae. It is the largest owl in its range apart from the tawny fish owl, and it is set apart by its deep-forest way of life. Northern birds and those from Sri Lanka differ in size, and Sri Lankan birds also show a faint honey-brown band on the breast.
