Spot-flanked Gallinule

Porphyriops melanops

The Spot-flanked Gallinule, also known as the Porphyriops melanops, is a small waterbird found in South America. It is characterized by its striking black and white plumage, with distinctive red legs and a red bill. These birds are typically found in marshes, wetlands, and reedbeds, where they forage for aquatic insects, small fish, and plant matter. They are known for their loud, repetitive calls and are often observed swimming and walking on floating vegetation. The Spot-flanked Gallinule is not currently considered to be at risk, but its wetland habitats are increasingly threatened by human activities and habitat loss.
