Spotted Crake, Porzana porzana, breeds across western Europe into central Asia and winters in Africa and western Pakistan. It is a rail in the family Rallidae, found in marshes and sedge beds. The bird is best recognised by its short, straight bill, yellow with a red base, which separates it from the water rail. Adults show brown upperparts, a blue-grey breast, dark barring and white spots on the flanks, with green legs and long toes. It is secretive in the breeding season and more often heard than seen.
