Spotted Piculet, Picumnus pygmaeus, is a woodpecker from eastern Brazil, where it is confined to the north-eastern part of the country. It lives in dry open woodland and caatinga shrubland. The species is a resident throughout its range. Adult males have a black cap with a red forehead patch and white spotting on the rest of the crown, while females lack the red. The underparts carry large black and white spots, and juveniles are duller with less distinct markings.
