Spotted Rail

Pardirallus maculatus

The Spotted Rail (Pardirallus maculatus) is a small to medium-sized bird species found in wetlands and grasslands of South America. It has a distinctive appearance with its spotted plumage, short tail, and red bill. These secretive birds are often difficult to spot due to their shy nature and preference for dense vegetation. Spotted Rails are primarily insectivorous, foraging for insects, small invertebrates, and seeds in their marshy habitats. They are known for their loud, repetitive calls during the breeding season. Although not currently considered globally threatened, the Spotted Rail faces habitat loss and degradation in some parts of its range.
