Canachites canadensis
The Spruce Grouse, also known as the Canada Grouse, is a medium-sized bird found in the boreal forests of North America. It is known for its cryptic plumage, with mottled brown and black feathers that provide excellent camouflage in its forest habitat. The male has a red comb over its eye and a black throat, while the female has a more subdued plumage. These birds are primarily herbivorous, feeding on the needles of coniferous trees and occasionally consuming insects. They are often seen foraging on the ground and are known for their relatively tame behavior, allowing close approach by humans. The Spruce Grouse is not considered globally threatened and is relatively common throughout its range.
