Squamate Antbird

Drymophila squamata

The Squamate Antbird (Drymophila squamata) is a small passerine bird found in the Amazon rainforest of South America. It is known for its distinctive behavior of following army ant swarms to feed on insects and small invertebrates flushed out by the ants. This species has a dark brown plumage with a rufous crown and distinctive white spots on the wings and tail. The Squamate Antbird is often heard before it is seen, with its loud, repetitive calls echoing through the dense undergrowth. It is a secretive bird that forages low in the understory and is often found in mixed-species flocks.
